Background

Background

Navigating healthcare has become increasingly complex while public health budget cuts have severely reduced the capacity of outreach professionals. In partnership with Cedars-Sinai Cancer Research Center for Health Equity (CRCHE) and Community Outreach and Engagement (COE), this project aims to develop an AI-powered navigation tool that bridges critical gaps in public health outreach, addressing disparities in screening rates across Southern California.

Language & Cultural Barriers

Non-English speakers currently rely on generic translation tools or family members to bridge communication gaps. This often leads to misinterpretation of complex medical terms and eligibility requirements, increasing anxiety and mistrust.

Fragmented Resources

Critical information is scattered across disconnected touchpoints—from physical posters to hospital websites. Users often get lost in the system, forcing them to wait for the next physical event to ask for help.

Generic Information

Current educational materials are static, "one-size-fits-all" brochures. They fail to address individual health risks or specific demographics, leaving users unsure about their personal screening needs.

HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) sets the national standard for protecting sensitive patient data. In this project, strict adherence to HIPAA meant we could not rely on traditional data-heavy AI training. Instead, we had to architect a system that prioritized user privacy and trust above data collection, ensuring no personal health information was ever compromised.

Our research revealed that technology without human context feels alienating. An app alone isn't enough. We realized the solution required a hybrid Service Design model: leveraging physical workshops and human navigators to "onboard" users into the system, using the digital tool to empower them, rather than replacing the human connection they rely on.
